London 2012 today launched the programme for the London 2012 Festival, a spectacular 12-week, UK-wide celebration bringing together leading artists from across the world from 21 June – 9 September 2012.
London 2012 today launched the programme for the London 2012 Festival, a spectacular 12-week, UK-wide celebration bringing together leading artists from across the world from 21 June – 9 September 2012.
Performers from the Land of Giants project celebrate the launch of the London 2012 Festival in Northern Ireland.
The event will celebrate the huge range, quality and accessibility of the UK’s world-class culture, and give the opportunity for people across the country to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
With the likes of Damon Albarn, Cate Blanchett, Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst and Jude Law involved, the London 2012 Festival will offer more than 10 million opportunities to see 1,000 performances and events.
Ruth Mackenzie, Cultural Olympiad Director, said: ‘From 21 June to 9 September 2012, across the whole of the UK, new work from the best artists, musicians, writers, comedians, film makers and other creative talent will be presented in the largest festival in the country.
‘I would like to thank our Premier Partners BP and BT and Principle Funders Arts Council England, Legacy Trust UK and the Olympic Lottery Distributor for making it possible.’
Highlights of the programme for London 2012 Festival include:

A summer like no other
A great range of music events will also be taking place throughout the UK for the Festival. 'BT River of Music', a spectacular weekend of free live music, will represent all 205 participating London 2012 nations, while BBC Radio 1 will stage its biggest-ever free live music event with 'BBC Radio 1 Hackney Weekend 2012'.
The Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: 'This quite extraordinary line up of artists, performers, events and activities will ensure that in London and throughout the country there is something for everyone, to enjoy, to be thrilled and be inspired by.
'Here in London, we want to create a summer like no other, so that Londoners and visitors, wherever they are in the capital, come away feeling they have been part of something exhilarating, a unique moment in time the like of which they could get nowhere else.'

Highlights of the programme for London 2012 Festival include:
- The World Shakespeare Festival, a celebration of Shakespeare as the world's playwright, produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company in an unprecedented collaboration with leading UK and international arts organisations.
- The world’s largest and most influential dance initiative, the Big Dance, will expand to reach across the whole of the UK.
- Yoko Ono will be the subject of a major exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery, extending out of the Gallery and into Kensington Gardens.
- The three-year BT Road to 2012 project will reach its conclusion at the National Portrait Gallery with a free exhibition of portraits taken by leading photographers.
- Alfred Hitchcock’s early British masterpieces will be restored to their former glory and presented in a series of one-off screenings across London with live music.
