Official London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic posters unveiled

04 Nov 2011
A collection of specially commissioned images by 12 of the UK’s leading artists to celebrate the London 2012 Games have been unveiled.

Director of the Cultural Olympiad Ruth Mackenzie surveys Bridget Riley's 'Rose Rose' and 'Tracey Emin's 'Birds 2012', two of the 12 posters unveiled today.
Each image is a distinct interpretation of either the Olympic or Paralympic Games by the artists, with the diversity of the series demonstrating the creative talent that exists within the UK.
The Olympic poster artists are Martin Creed, Anthea Hamilton, Howard Hodgkin,     Chris Ofili, Bridget Riley and Rachel Whiteread.
The Paralympic posters have been designed by Fiona Banne, Michael Craig-Martin, Tracey Emin, Gary Hume, Sarah Morris and Bob and Roberta Smith.
The images will be part of a high profile-campaign to promote the London 2012 Games, and will also go on show at Tate Britain in a free exhibition as part of the London 2012 Festival next summer.
The images will be available to buy as both posters and limited edition prints from 3pm today.

Artistic tradition
The official posters of the Games have become a special celebration of the meeting of art and sport over the last 100 years. The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) has sought to return to this artistic tradition, working on a judging panel with Tate and the Plus Tate Group to select the final list of 12.
Nicholas Serota, Director, Tate, said: 'We are delighted that British artists have produced such compelling images in response to the Olympic and Paralympic Games'.
